Electric Bread Knife

An electric bread knife is an electrical appliance used to slice bread (though most models can also be used to slice meat, cheese, vegetables, etc.). They are very easy to use and can produce slices which are thinner and much more uniform in size (thickness) than one can usually produce with a regular bread knife.

An electric bread knife can produce these uniform slices of bread without damaging the bread by the use of its two serrated blades. These two blades are attached together and when in use, the blades move rapidly back and forth in a sawing motion. Though most electric bread knives need an electrical outlet to work, some models are now available which are cordless – they run on batteries.

Electric bread knives are ideal to use with a bread guide. Bread guides are usually made of wood or acrylic and ensure slices of a uniform thickness. Many will have a built-in crumb catcher as well.

Most electric bread knives will also work just as well on meat and vegetables. This author uses an electric bread knife with great success when cutting up a watermelon. This video, which we have posted, shows an electric knife being used to carve a turkey. As you can see, an electric bread knife is versatile and can be used for more than just slicing bread.
